Cake Day at School

Cake by Erin

Cake by Michael
These remarkable cakes were designed by cousins Erin and Michael, both aged 4. Each cake was made from a single 9-inch ‘round’. In the case of the butterfly, the 9-inch round cake was cut in half across its diameter and the rounded edges were placed back-to-back. Some artful trimming gave shape to the wings. After frosting the cake with some brilliantly-coloured icing, jelly beans defined this butterfly’s distinctive wing pattern.

The sauce on the pizza cake was made by adding red food colouring to white icing; shredded white chocolate took the place of cheese; fruit leather was used to make slices of pepperoni; and, black licorice ‘olives’ and green jelly candy ‘peppers’ completed the pizza toppings.

Little sister Adele, aged 2, decorated the chocolate cake (seen below) for the family dinner utilizing marshmallows and Smarties in a very post-modern design.

It’s not always a piece of cake to help children learn where food comes from and how it’s made. Kudos to the parents, grandparents and others who make this happen and clean up afterward.

These cakes will be part of whole contingent of cakes that will be entered in a school raffle (5 raffle tickets for a dollar). Any way you slice it, cake day is awesome.
