Peachy Keen

This is the time of the year when Ontario tree fruits, like peaches, show up in markets. The following PEACH FACTS have been drawn from the Foodland Ontario Website:

  • Who knew that one medium-size peach contains 37 calories?
  • And that they were so old? Archaeologists have found bowls of peaches, revered as a potent symbol of immortality, entombed with Chinese dignitaries several centuries before Christ. The peach is likely native to the part of China near the Pakistani border where it still grows wild. The Latin name for peach means "Persian plum" because the Romans imported it from Persia (now Iran) some 2,000 years ago.
  • And that they had such fabulous names? Here are some popular Ontario varieties of peaches listed in the order in which they ripen. You’ve got to love these beautiful names for this beautiful fruit: Harrow Diamond, Garnet Beauty, Early Redhaven, Redhaven, Vivid, Loring and Harrow Beauty.
I made a peach pie a week ago and froze it ( before baking) to use on the holiday weekend. Although I love the flavour of peaches and the gorgeous colour of their skins, just thinking about that fuzzy exterior makes me shiver. It’s something akin to fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I know that I’ve said that I can eat anything except Poptarts, but peach skin is something else that simply cannot pass my lips. In fact, it can’t get anywhere near my lips. This is why I always scald fresh peaches briefly in boiling water to loosen their skins for easy peeling.
