Halloween Treat- Maple Cream Fudge

When I was a child , my parents did not buy candy to hand out on Halloween; instead, we decorated cookies and made popcorn balls and other treats for the neighbourhood kids. Of course, handing out home-made candy to 'trick-or-treaters' is now heretical. So, I guess if you happen to make this Maple Cream Fudge, you'll just have to eat it all by yourself. Happy Halloween.

Aunt Dorothy's Maple Cream Fudge

3 cups of firmly packed brown sugar
1 tin of sweetened condensed milk
1/3 cup of milk
1/2 inch slice of butter,(about a quarter of a cup)
2 teaspoons vanilla

Put all ingredients except the vanilla into a saucepan over a low heat and stir constantly for at least 20 minutes. Turn heat up a little and keep stirring frequently. Cook it to the "soft boil" stage on a candy thermometer. (If you do not have a candy thermometer, test the candy by dropping a bit of the mixture into a cup of cool water; it should form a soft ball that falltens when removed from the water). Remove from heat and continue to beat by hand. When the mixture has cooled slightly, add the vanilla. When the mixture begins to stiffen, turn it into a buttered pan. Cut into 1 inch squares.

What is interesting about this fudge is that the only 'maple' involved is in its name. Sure tastes creamy though.
